From Russian with love and boo-boos on the brain

Our son, Iyal, was born in Astrakhan, Russia over 12 years ago. Iyal was adopted by my husband and me at 14 months and was diagnosed with partial fetal alcohol syndrome (pFAS) at 4 years and 4 months. In 2002, fetal alcohol effects (FAE) was the term given to the approximate 90% of prenatal alcohol exposed children who did not exhibit the full features of the most severe form, fetal alcohol syndrome. Now, in 2011, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders FASDs is the umbrella term used to describe the wide range of affects that can occur if a fetus is exposed to alcohol. pFAE has been replaced with a different name, alcohol related neurodevelopment disorder (ARND). The alphabet just gets longer.
